Seaward Electronics, based in Peterlee, County Durham, manufacture installation test equipment for the electrical contracting market. The company has for a long time had a reputation for innovative, yet practical design.
Fluke, based in Seattle USA are a multinational organisation specialising in providing test tools for electricians. As part of their corporate growth strategy Fluke decided to enter the installation test market. After initial studies it became apparent that a global product was required and that such development would have to take place quickly. In addition they felt their knowledge of the needs of the installation market was limited and this together with stringent commercial deadlines meant that a business partner was needed.
After searching for and meeting companies throughout Europe, Fluke asked Seaward Electronic to participate in an exciting, yet challenging, product development programme.

A 'strategic alliance' developed allowing Seaward and Fluke to develop the product jointly. The product was then manufactured by Seaward and sold to fluke as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) product.
At this point, an internal development team was assembled containing members from all departments within Seaward. The team met weekly to ensure decisions were made and agreed quickly and progress was monitored. In addition to this, communication with all other contributors to the development process was thorough, with packaging, labels, plastics manufacturers, and p.c.b developers being involved early, and throughout.
The product was re-developed with a global perspective, with bespoke product labels for each country of distribution.
The success, not only of the product but of the strategic business alliance is in no doubt, with the new product now being sold in 14 European countries and Australasia. The process has also permanently changed the attitude within Seaward to the need for constant attention and commitment to product development, and the opportunities presented by a global marketplace.
